The Cutty Sark is perhaps the most famous of the Clipper Ships. She was designed by Hercules Linton and in 1869 launched at Dunbarton in the Scottish Clyde. She was built to as a tea clipper. Her sleek hull enabled her to carry more sail than any previously designed sailing ship which translated into speed and was indeed the fastest ship to take the Cape of Good Hope route in her prime. Unfortunately for her, she was built close to the same time as the opening of the Suez canal and could not compete with the steam ships; by 1877 she was obsolete to serve the purpose for which she was designed, carrying tea from China. Therefore her working lifetime was relatively short. Saved from the scrap yard and restored, the Cutty Sark can be seen today in dry dock in Greenwich, England.
She is 85 m long, 11 m wide and has a draught of 6.4m and displacement of 2,133 tons. The Cutty Sark is today preserved for posterity at a dry dock in Greenwich.

The name Cutty Sark comes from Robert Burns' poem, Tam O' Shanter. O’Shanter meets a group of witches, most of whom are ugly, except for one, who is beautiful and young and wears only a ' Cutty Sark', a short chemise. The figurehead on the ship represents this witch.
