The Victory was built in Portsmouth at the Chatham
yard in 1737. It is most famous for being the flagship for Lord
Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It is on permanent
display at Portsmouth harbor in the United Kingdom. The H.M.S.
Victory has 3 masts and displaces over 3500 tons. and measures
226 feet in length and 51 feet abeam. She carries 36 sails totaling
four acres of canvas and can reach a top speed of 10 knots. She
had an amazing amount of firepower: 104 guns and stocked with
35 tons of powder and 120 tons of shot! She could remain at sea
without restocking for up to six months.
Commissioned in 1778, H.M.S. Victory had almost
30 years hard service at the time of Trafalgar. She was a veteran
of many hard fought naval battles. On October 12, 1805, one of
the most momentous battles in European history broke out off Cape
Trafalgar, Spain. The combined fleets of France and its ally,
Spain led by Napoleon to invade England with his all-powerful
army were defeated and the supremacy of Britain as a sea power
established.
